A hand from last night

First seat, all white at matchpoints you pick up 9 AQJxx T876 AQx. The auction proceeds:
1H (2D) 2S (3D)
Your call?

Third seat, all white at matchpoints you pick up AKQTxxxxx - - JT9x. Partner opens 1H, and righty overcalls 2D. Your call?

...

If you chose 2S, the auction continues 3D-X-P. Your call?

1) Pass. If it's our hand partner will act, if he passes they're probably making it. He is known to have a single or void in diamonds, so I'd want a bit better holding to double them.

2) Obviously the same hand as (1). Change partner's hand to x AQJxx Q10xx Axx and he has a completely automatic double and slam is good (and he may not accept a slam try). Thus you shouldn't merely bid 4s here. I would bid 4d then 4s over 4h. A straightforward 5s would work too -- partner should bid slam if he has a club control, but if he had x AQJxx A10xx Qxx then you might go down in 5...

I have a name for the type of argument I am using against just bidding 4s on #2 -- the two orders of magnitude rule. In such a situation there are three "level" options: sign off, try for higher contract, bid higher contract. If the only winning option was the one two steps away from the one you chose, you probably at least should have chosen the one away option (even if that wouldn't have worked).

In first seat, I double, particular if my pass is not forcing. Even if it is, I don't want pard bidding 3S when 3DX is our best score. Maybe I just like defending too much.

In third seat, I bid 6S. Maybe I just like declaring too much.

If I decided to bid 2S instead, I'll be happy to see the opponents likely out of the auction, and I'll wonder how I might look for slam more scientifically. Honestly I would probably cue 4D and hope we can muddle our way through.

I'd pass opener's hand. I need lots more in trumps to commit to the red card. Thanks, RHO, for bidding... if you hadn't, I guess I would've had to bid 3C.

With responder's hand, I guess I'd pull out the Humpty Dumpty sequence of 4D - 4H - 5S.
