06:19 pm - What happens in Vegas will eventually be posted here Looks like I'll be at summer nationals in Vegas after all - Jeff, Pat, Cristal, and I just won the D19 B GNT finals today. And now, I'm off to Columbus to play games for a week.

09:53 pm - An Addendum A while back, I discovered an aspect of squeezes that is generally glossed over in the standard texts on the subject: having a loser remaining is generally a good idea when you embark on a squeeze. On Saturday, I made the further discovery that partner may be puzzled if you create the necessary loser by pitching away a winner, even if the squeeze does operate from there...

08:26 am - Seattle Sectional KO I played in bracket 2 of the KO with Jeff yesterday. These were the decisions I faced on the last two boards (if it matters, you think you're up a bit in the match; you were losing by 12 at the half, but you just brought in a no-play vul game three boards ago and you were doing fine before that)

10:51 pm - Bridge today I played bridge at the club with Zach today for the first time in quite a while. We had a decent game, and finished in a two-way tie for second out of eleven pairs. I only had two complete disasters. One was on the very last round; I tossed in my usual aggressive 3C over 1H on xxx x Jxx AQ97xx and went for 1100. The other was a bad matchpoint decision on my part; after the uncontested auction 2C-2D(game-forcing)-2S-3C-4NT-5C(1 or 4), I bid 6C on KQJxx AKx AQ KQx. Partner had xx Qx xxx AJTxxx, so 6NT could be claimed on the opening lead, and the field was actually there.

02:26 pm - Tuesday night bridge I played my first session in Seattle with Jeff last night. The club game was much larger than I'm used to in Austin; I believe there were 21 full tables, which were split into two sections. Unfortunately, we did not cover ourselves in glory at 47.71% through a combination of some bad decisions and an unusual number of fixes.

11:33 pm Played another game of bridge with Jon today, at which I sucked. I'll replace this with a real post if I find the time, but I'm not sure I made any really good plays or bids, and I managed to forget we were playing Bergen raises at some point.
In other news, Rehana and I were approved for the apartment in Ballard we were looking at.

08:27 pm - Bridge I had my last regular game with Paul tonight. We finished second; we would have been first had I not pitched two boards on the floor.
Board 15: K762 87 65 AQJ94. I decided this was worth a third seat 1C bid, since my points were in my long suits, I had an easy response, and I wanted a club against 3NT. LHO stuck in 2NT, which partner doubled; RHO bid 3H, doubled by partner and passed out. What's your lead?
Board 16: I reach 3DX with AT4 542 Q9865 J8 on the auction P P P 1H P P X P 2D 2H P P 3D P P X. The opening lead is a small diamond, and dummy tables QJ73 K AT7 T7543. LHO is a strong player, RHO is not. I decided to duck the opening lead, getting the king from my right, and then the ace, king, and nine of clubs, LHO following with the six and two. I ruffed the third club, LHO discarding a heart, and led a heart to LHO's ace. Another trump came back; I decided to duck this on the board, capturing RHO's jack with the queen. I ruffed a heart on the board, then led the queen of spades to the king and ace, pulled the last trump (from LHO), and cashed the spade ten, getting the eight on my right.
At this point, a competent player would simply finesse in spades and claim; RHO's shape is pretty clearly 2-5-2-4. I just wasn't with it, though, and failed to finesse in spades; down one. -200 was an absolute bottom; +670 would have been an absolute top.

12:06 am - Annoying hands, Sunday swiss edition Hand 1: I have xx AJ987 xx AJ9x. Partner opens an 11-14 notrump, RHO overcalls 2C. I decide to make a very aggressive vulnerable gameforce (since I have clubs under control, and if partner fits hearts I can probably get some ruffs in her hand), and eventually end up in 4H after LHO sticks in 3C. Partner tables something along the lines of AT98 Kx Kxx Kxxx; the opening club lead is ruffed. It turns out that RHO mistakenly thought that they were playing some form of capp; since their agreement was natural, I was just fixed; -3. 2H-1 was the result at the other table.
Hand 2: I have xx x KJT9x AQJTx. Partner opens 1D. We have an uncontested auction up to 5D (partner offers 3NT, but with my hand I feel I must try for the diamond slam; I even know that partner can't have balanced crap because we play a weak notrump). RHO doubles 5D and cashes three tricks in the majors off the top. Partner has QJxx QJxx AQxx K. At the other table, my hand somehow decided to settle for 2D after the 1D opening bid...
Hand 3: I have AKTxx AKTx Jx Jx. Partner opens a weak notrump; I bid 2D, forcing stayman, then a 3C shape ask over 2NT. Partner responds 4C, which doesn't exist; I know partner doesn't have five clubs, so I bid 4S, 5H, and 6S over a series of club bids in hopes that she'll eventually pass. She pulls 6S to 6NT; making exactly. This one was annoying for our opponents...
